One of the most sunny, warm and beautiful suburbs in Brisbane, Sherwood is located about 8 km from the city centre along the southern bank of the Brisbane River. The heritage listed Sherwood Arboretum and the John Herbert Memorial Vista are notable features of this leafy green, tree-lined suburb. The Arboretum, established in 1925, is home to 1100 mainly indigenous trees, making this a popular recreational area for Sherwood residents.
Sherwood has its own train station that provides quick access to many amenities in the surrounding locale and beautifully renovated homes in quiet, leafy streets make this an attractive suburb. There are many stand-alone homes in Sherwood (72%) and modern units account for a further 17%. Homes occupied by couples with children comprise 46% of dwellings in the area, with 36% being occupied by couples without children and 14% representing single parent families. The suburb is family oriented and comprised mainly of large, older-style homes.
A number of schools service the Sherwood area, including the Sherwood State School, and nearby St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School, Christ the King Primary School and Corinda High School, among others. Also close by are a number of quality sporting facilities and special interest clubs including the Taylor Bridge Junior Rugby Union Club and Croquet Club in Graceville, the Oxley Sailing Club and the Bushwalkers of Southern Queensland Club. There are a number of churches in Sherwood and neighbouring suburbs including the Sherwood Uniting Church, the Christ Community Church West and the Anglican Church of Australia in Chelmer.
The shopping districts along Sherwood Road and nearby Oxley Road offer residents many specialist stores both creative and practical and the Indooroopilly’s Shopping Centre is only a short drive away or a few minutes by train.
Sherwood Forest Park and the Lone Pine Koala Centre on the other side of the Brisbane River offer residents great ways to relax and enjoy the natural setting and wildlife of the area. Other parks in this beautiful and green living oriented area include Hives Park and Stewart Franklin.
