Located around 7km from Brisbane’s central business district, Indooroopilly is home to the Walter Taylor Bridge and one of the first and most popular major shopping centres to be built in Brisbane. The suburb is very centrally situated and enjoys a thriving retail, office and commercial atmosphere with close proximity to the University of Queensland.
Recent developments include new residential units near the railway station and the suburb is popular with many Brisbane professionals and University students alike who enjoy the riverside suburb’s nearness to the central hub of Brisbane. Over a third of Indooroopilly’s dwellings are either units or townhouses. Over 60% of dwellings are stand alone houses while units account for 31%. There are both colonial style homes as well as modern brick and tile homes in the suburb and blocks are generally large with a high percentage of land devoted to green areas.
Alongside the parks by the river are a number of beautiful homes and one of the most exciting aspects of living in Indooroopilly is being able to see and hear the great Flying Fox colonies that occupy Indooroopilly Island. A railway bridge and a separate bridge for cyclists stand parallel to the Walter Taylor Bridge, making the area very accessible.
More than 41% of homes in Indooroopilly are occupied by couples with children while 37% are occupied by couples without children. There is a very wide range of community facilities available to residents, including Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, a bus interchange and train services. For those enjoying the movies and retail experiences, the El Dorado Cinema Complex can be found on Coonan Street and the Indooroopilly Shoppingtown offers not only an extensive boutique and shopping experience but houses the Megaplex.
A renovated pub and the many restaurants make Indooroopilly a popular choice with young residents and there is a lively nightlife to be found in the shopping precinct near the recently upgraded railway station. Sporting facilities include the Indooroopilly Golf Club.
Some of the schools available in the area are the Indooroopilly State High School, St Peter’s Lutheran College, Brigidine Secondary College and Nudgee Junior College. Local parks offering recreational facilities include Dobell Street, Keating Park and Moore Park.
